Group 3 base oils are considered a high-quality option and offer better performance characteristics compared to lower-tier base oils.
Here's a breakdown of the different base oil groups:
Group I: These are the least refined base oils, generally produced through solvent refining. They have a relatively high level of impurities and sulfur content. Group I base oils are commonly used in industrial and marine applications.
Group II: These base oils are more refined than Group I and are produced through hydrocracking. They have lower sulfur content and better viscosity index (VI) than Group I oils. Group II base oils are widely used in passenger car motor oils (PCMO) and other applications.
Group III: Group III base oils are even more refined through further hydrocracking, resulting in higher purity and better performance characteristics. They have excellent viscosity indexes, low volatility, and improved low-temperature properties. Group III base oils are often used in high-performance motor oils and other demanding applications.
Group IV: These are synthetic base oils known as polyalphaolefins (PAOs). They offer excellent stability across a wide range of temperatures, making them suitable for extreme conditions and high-performance applications.
